We've Seen the Miracles

We've Seen the Miracles

The passion started in 1946 when Jack Gordon's younger sister had a baby who was born with a life-threatening medical condition. After birth, Jack's niece was immediately transferred to Nationwide Children's where she underwent an eight-hour surgery that ultimately saved her life. She grew up to live a happy, healthy life; Nationwide Children's gave her that chance.

Winnie's connection to Nationwide Children's started at a young age as well when her cousin had polio and spent a lot of time at Nationwide Children's. Through the countless surgeries her cousin had over the years, her family became connected with the physical medicine program at the hospital.

Her cousin received lots of wonderful therapy from incredible doctors and staff at Nationwide Children's, which eventually led to her being able to walk up stairs-previously an insurmountable goal. Her cousin was tied so closely to the hospital she became a secretary at Nationwide Children's and Winnie has fond memories of visiting her there.

"We've seen miracles happen at Nationwide Children's, including in our own family," Jack says.

Seeing Is Believing
The connection to Nationwide Children's grew when Jack recently served as the executor of his friend's will. Jack's friend had chosen Nationwide Children's as the primary charity to receive funds from the estate and Jack had the opportunity to develop a very special relationship with Nationwide Children's Hospital Foundation.

Jack and Winnie quickly formed a personal relationship with the staff and looked forward to tours of the hospital and hearing about the progress from doctors during Dinner with the Doctors.

"You can't understand the miracles that are happening at Nationwide Children's until you take a tour of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and see a baby breathing for the first time on his own," Jack says.

"During our tour of the new hospital we were fascinated by all the incredible features. You have to see it to believe it. They thought of everything, including a place where parents of ICU patients can get some rest," Winnie says.

Win-Win Giving
So when it came to their own charitable contributions, Jack and Winnie decided to include a charitable gift annuity in their deferred gifts to Nationwide Children's Hospital.

"We didn't know much about charitable gift annuities, but the staff at Nationwide Children's Hospital Foundation educated us and made it so easy," Winnie says.

Jack and Winnie have designated their gift to areas of greatest need at the hospital. They are connected to the mission that every child will receive expert care, regardless of the family's ability to pay.

"Anybody who needs it should have it," Jack says.

The Gordons appreciate this vehicle for giving to a cause close to their hearts.

"You can also leave donations in your will, but now we can enjoy seeing our gift in action, the children's lives we are impacting," Winnie says.

"We've seen the miracles that happen at Nationwide Children's every day. When you give to Nationwide Children's you know it's going to a good cause," Jack says.
