Newton and Eleanor Brokaw
When Newton Brokaw called attorney Jacintha Kraft Balch to assist him in preparing his final estate plan, he knew he wanted to leave a gift to Nationwide
Children's Hospital. Newton and Eleanor Brokaw were married for over sixty years, while Newton enjoyed a career as a city planner. Although the couple did
not have children, Newton knew Nationwide Children's Hospital was taking care of the health care needs of their community's children and wanted to support
our mission.
First and foremost in his thoughts, however, was to provide for his wife, Eleanor, Balch said. "Although the Brokaws did not have children of their own,
they were empathetic to the needs of hurting children in their community. They were dedicated to each other and wanted to take that love and share it with
others. To that end, they left a legacy to Nationwide Children's Hospital. It is for their generosity that they will be remembered and for their lives well
lived."
Balch was able to help Newton define his gift intentions and prepared an estate plan to put assets into trust to care for Eleanor's financial needs. Sadly,
Newton passed away just after completing his estate plan.
The plan's design allowed for Eleanor's financial comfort throughout her remaining years. When she passed away in January 2012, the assets in Newton's
trust were distributed to charities, including Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Jacintha and her fellow attorney and spouse, Randolph Balch, together with Carol Whetstone, of Park National Bank, stayed close to Eleanor following
Newton's death. We are grateful to the Brokaw's advisors for their care of Eleanor and their careful stewardship of the gifts this remarkable couple made
to charity through their estate plan.
Nationwide Children's Hospital is very grateful to Newton and Eleanor Brokaw for this important gift. Their names will be prominently displayed in the
hospital, in recognition of the generosity they have shown and their commitment to the future of the Hospital.
